The old mill at the Falls of Dochart, Killin
St. Fillan's Mill, located north of the Falls of Dochart in Killin, was built around 1840 by John Campbell, the 2nd Marquis of Breadalbane. This three-storey T-plan structure is a B-listed building and marks the site of a long history of grain milling, dating back to around 750 AD when it is believed St. Fillan constructed the first mill. Tradition holds that the mill does not operate on St. Fillan’s Day (January 20th, or January 9th on the Julian calendar) out of respect for the saint.
In 1910, the mill was converted into a tweed mill by the Wilson family, who ceased using water power and continued wool weaving here until the 1960s. After falling into disrepair, the mill was purchased by Stirling District Council in 1988 and restored with the help of local organizations. It reopened in 1994 as the Breadalbane Folklore Centre, offering a Tourist Information Centre and exhibitions. Although it closed in 2011 due to financial issues, it was revived in 2013 by local volunteers and remains a community resource, hosting events and activities.
The mill is also known for a set of healing stones, believed to be blessed by St. Fillan, which were traditionally kept in a niche in the mill’s wall. The straw on which the stones rest is replaced every January 5th, aligning with the Julian calendar’s Christmas Eve.
Printed on 265gsm ultra white base and stippled lustre paper. Please note that all images are representative and slight variations in prints may occur due to your screen calibration differing from mine slightly. Don't worry though, I do my utmost to ensure the prints are as good as possible before shipping.
Please note:
Any watermarks will not be printed.
Prints are delivered with a small white border around the print. This is intentional and serves a couple of useful purposes:
- Framing Flexibility: It makes matting and framing easier without cropping the image.
- Protection: It allows for easier and safer handling without touching the printed area.
If you'd prefer your prints without borders, please let me know using the text box next to the print size selection.
